Iodine is an important component of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Thyroid hormones regulate many important biochemical reactions, including protein synthesis and enzymatic activity, and are critical determinants of metabolic activity. They are also essential for proper development of skeleton and central nervous system in foetuses and infants.

Iodine deficiency symptoms:

  • chronic fatigue
  • weak immunity
  • oedema
  • menstrual irregularities
  • anaemia
  • overweight
  • hypotension
  • cognitive decline

Adults require at least 150 mcg per day, pregnant women 209 mcg, and lactating women 290 mcg.
