The main function of this water-soluble B vitamin is to synthesize coenzyme A (CoA) and acyl carrier protein. CoA is required for synthesis and decomposition of fatty acids, transfer of acetyl and acyl groups, and many other anabolic and catabolic processes. The main role of the acyl carrier protein is the synthesis of fatty acids.

Adults require 5 mg of vitamin B5, pregnant and lactating women 6 mg.
