zinc

Immunity

Zinc is found in cells throughout the body. It helps the immune system to fight bacteria and viruses. The body also requires zinc to make proteins and DNA, genetic material of all cells. Zinc also promotes wound healing and is important to feel proper taste and smell.

Metabolism

Zinc is involved in many aspects of cellular metabolism. It is required for catalytic activity of about 100 enzymes.

Development and Growth

Zinc also supports normal growth and development during pregnancy, childhood and adolescence.

Zinc deficiency symptoms:

  • growth inhibition
  • loss of appetite
  • impaired immune function
  • hair loss
  • diarrhoea
  • delayed puberty
  • lesions of eyes and skin
  • weight loss
  • delayed wound healing
  • taste disturbances
  • mental fatigue

Men require 11 mg of zinc per day, women 8 mg. The need for pregnant women in zinc is 11 mg per day, lactating women 12 mg.
